Musings

by Melody Dawes

I came across some questions recently in a publication on reaching goals. The questions certainly made me stop and think. In fact, I began to write a few thoughts in regard to each question to evaluate where I am in life.

The questions began innocently enough making me ponder objectively the goals I have reached and those I am still reaching for. After a few questions, I realized that objectively reaching goals had a lot to do with other areas of my life, as the questions became more personal in nature.

Here’s a sampling. Take your time.

  • Questions to ponder as one matures:

  • Have I reached the goals I set so long ago as I began my journey in adulthood?

  • Have I attained the measure of character that I desire?

  • Is encouraging others the foremost motivation on my mind?

  • Am I watching my children develop patience while waiting for each stage of life, or am I pushing them hurriedly into the next phase?

  • What can be done to overcome this?

  • Am I accomplishing all I can every day to make my world a better place?

  • Am I reading at least a couple of books a year?

  • Has my vocabulary increased every year of my adulthood, or am I like, still talking like, you know…..?

  • Is my contentment found in the number of things I own or in the solid relationships shared with family and friends?

  • Do I strive to lead by example?

  • Have I given up the immature habit of complaining?

  • Am I spending time every day in a period of silence to be able to hear how my Maker would have me to use my day?

  • Am I keeping in touch with hose older relatives that don’t get to get out as much as they used to?

  • Am I pro-active in raising my children to teach them values, or just re-acting to the situations they find themselves in?

  • Am I making a point to speak kindly to everyone I do business with during the course of the day?

  • Am I thanking those in my own household who make it possible for me to live, work, and play as I choose?

  • Am I counting all of my blessings on a regular basis so as not to get caught up in the futile cares of the world?

  • Am I taking care of the body God gave me so it will sustain me throughout a long life?

  • Am I picking up and throwing away the trash I leave behind at parks and public places?

  • Am I encouraging those kids on my block as they play, squeal, and chase one another, or do I begrudge their energy?

  • Have I forgiven those who have hurt me in the past?

  • Am I willing to forgive those who hurt me just yesterday?

  • Am I still hanging on to past grudges that are not worth hanging on to?

  • Am I nurturing the relationships with my friends by staying in touch with their lives and being available to help in their life circumstances?

  • Am I developing new goals as I mature to take me through each stage of life?

  • Are there others who look to me for counsel?

  • Do I know how to ask for help? Am I looking forward to growing older and better?

  • What stands in my way of becoming who I want to become? Can that be changed?
